The government wants to give the big 3 auto makers money so they can keep making big, gas guzzling cars that, do to the economy and unemployment, no one can afford to buy.
One of the pundits pointed out that two years ago Delta Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection, and now they're the biggest airline in the world. Bankruptcy gave them the time and breathing space to reoganize their business.
I don't see why the same thing can't work with the auto industry.
You may be right Thomas, the counter argument that I heard that a plane ticket is "cheap" and a short term purchase - less to lose - that an expensive vehicle that you intend to drive for awhile with the prospect of having no company to to back it up - don't you then buy a Hyundai, Honda, etc.?
